Our Story
We started Retro Verse because the best clothing was already made — it just needed to be found, authenticated, and delivered to people who would actually appreciate it.
How it started
A trunk full of flannel and a question nobody could answer
It began with a trunk. An old steel almirah in a Pune storage unit, belonging to a family that was moving abroad, full of clothing from the 1980s and 90s that nobody had touched in twenty years. A friend of a friend mentioned it. We drove three hours to look.
Inside: a deadstock color-block windbreaker with German retail tags still attached. A 1987 concert tour tee, graphic cracked exactly the way real aging cracks plastic ink. Two plaid flannels so heavy they felt like armor. We couldn't believe nobody had claimed them. We bought the whole lot.
That trunk taught us something: India had decades of extraordinary vintage clothing sitting in storage, inherited from relatives who had traveled, bought abroad, or simply held onto things that were too good to discard. The pieces existed. What didn't exist was a reliable way to find them, verify they were what they claimed to be, and get them to people who would wear them.
So we built that. Retro Verse started as a sourcing operation — estate sales, bulk lot acquisitions from UK and US importers, collector networks in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru. We learned to authenticate by era: which stitch types were used in which decade, how to read label typography, how fabric weight and seam allowance change by year. We got obsessive about it.
Two years later, every piece we sell is era-verified by our team, cleaned using methods appropriate to the fabric, and described honestly — actual measurements, actual condition, actual history where we know it. We still get obsessive about it.
The decades we source from
Four eras. One standard.
Every era has its own construction signatures, fabric characteristics, and sourcing story. Here's what we look for in each.
Peace signs, psychedelic prints, and the mod revolution. The 60s dressed a generation that refused to be quiet. We source deadstock cottons, wool-blend shifts, and original counterculture pieces from estate lots across India and the UK.
- Graphic tees
- Mod shift dresses
- Nehru collars
- Kaftans
Disco, funk, and the swagger of the flare. The 70s were unapologetically loud — satin, acetate, and selvedge denim in proportions that modern fashion hasn't had the courage to revive. We found some of the best pieces in Mumbai collector lots.
- Satin disco shirts
- Bell-bottom jeans
- Platform era denim
- Wide-collar blouses
Neon, excess, and the birth of streetwear culture. The 80s produced some of the most collectable clothing ever made — deadstock sportswear, concert merch from world tours, and color-blocking that still turns heads today.
- Concert tour tees
- Neon windbreakers
- Colour-block jackets
- High-top sneaker era denim
Grunge, streetwear, and the golden age of denim. The 90s defined a generation of intentional dressing — heavy flannels, boxy denim jackets, and a casual cool that's never gone out of style. Our 90s selection is sourced from Pacific Northwest and UK lot acquisitions.
- Plaid flannel shirts
- Stone-wash denim jackets
- Oversized cotton tees
- Cargo and wide-leg denim
How we work
Our non-negotiables
Authentication first
Every piece is checked for era-consistent construction: stitch type, label typography, hardware style, fabric weight, and seam allowance. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't ship.
Cleaned before it reaches you
All vintage is professionally cleaned before dispatch. We use era-appropriate wash methods — no machine wash for delicate deadstock, no heat for natural fibers.
Honest about sizing
Vintage sizing runs differently in every decade. We give you the actual measurements — not the label size — so you order what will actually fit.
Packaged with care
Delicate and deadstock pieces ship in acid-free tissue. Everything gets a dust bag. We treat your purchase the way a collector treats a find.
“The best clothes were already made.
We just find them.”
